Cruise Packing Essentials: 15 Must-Haves You Don't Want to Leave Home Without!

Your suitcase is packed, your cruise is booked, and you're counting down the days until you set sail! But have you remembered everything you'll need?

One of the best things about cruising is unpacking once and waking up in a new destination. Whether you're sailing through the Caribbean, exploring Alaska, or cruising the Mediterranean, packing the right items can make your vacation more comfortable, convenient, and stress-free.

As experienced travel advisors, we've helped clients prepare for all kinds of cruises. And we've learned that sometimes it's the little things you pack that make the biggest difference.

Here are 15 cruise packing must-haves that we recommend for your next adventure.

1. Passport and Important Travel Documents

This might seem obvious, but it's the most important item on your packing list!

Before leaving home, make sure you have:

  • A valid passport, if required for your itinerary

  • Cruise boarding documents and luggage tags

  • Any required visas or travel authorizations

  • Travel insurance information

  • Copies of important documents

  • Credit cards and a little cash for ports of call

Travel Advisor Tip: Even when a passport isn't required for certain closed-loop cruises departing from the United States, we strongly recommend traveling with one. If an emergency requires you to fly home from a foreign port, having a valid passport can make the process much easier. Always verify your cruise line's documentation requirements.

2. A Carry-On Bag with First-Day Essentials

When you arrive at the cruise terminal, your larger luggage is usually collected and delivered to your stateroom later.

That means you may not see your suitcase for several hours!

Pack a small carry-on with your medications, important documents, valuables, swimsuit, sunscreen, sunglasses, phone charger, and a change of clothes.

Travel Advisor Tip: Want to enjoy the pool as soon as you board? Pack your swimsuit in your carry-on so you can start your vacation immediately!

3. Magnetic Hooks — A Cruiser's Secret Weapon

Cruise cabins are cleverly designed, but storage space can still be limited.

Many cruise stateroom walls and ceilings contain steel, making magnetic hooks a popular accessory for hanging hats, lightweight bags, lanyards, and other small items.

They help keep your cabin organized without taking up valuable drawer space.

Travel Advisor Tip: Choose strong, rubber-coated magnetic hooks, and test them on an appropriate surface. Not every cabin wall or panel is magnetic.

4. A Non-Surge-Protected USB Charging Hub

Between phones, smartwatches, cameras, and tablets, keeping everything charged can be challenging.

Cruise cabins sometimes have limited outlets, especially on older ships.

A compact, cruise-line-approved USB charging hub can be extremely useful.

Important: Many cruise lines prohibit surge protectors, extension cords, power strips, and certain multi-plug adapters. Check your specific cruise line's current policy before packing any electrical accessories.

5. A Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is important, especially when you're spending long days sightseeing or relaxing in the sun.

A reusable water bottle is convenient for onboard use and excursions where permitted.

Travel Advisor Tip: Choose an insulated bottle to help keep your water cool. Use designated filling stations and follow the ship's hygiene rules.

6. A Small First-Aid and Medication Kit

Nobody wants a headache, blister, or upset stomach to interrupt their vacation.

Consider packing:

  • Prescription medications in their original labeled containers

  • Bandages and blister pads

  • Pain relievers

  • Motion sickness remedies

  • Antacids

  • Any personal medical necessities

Travel Advisor Tip: Always carry essential medications in your carry-on luggage, not your checked bags. Bring enough for your entire trip plus a reasonable supply in case of travel delays. Check medication restrictions for countries on your itinerary.

7. Sunscreen and After-Sun Lotion

Even on cloudy days, sun exposure can be intense at sea.

Bring broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, lip balm with SPF, sunglasses, and a hat.

If you're headed to a tropical destination, consider a lightweight sun-protective shirt.

Travel Advisor Tip: Sunscreen is available on many ships, but purchasing it before your cruise may save you money. Check local requirements for sunscreen products, particularly in destinations with marine-protection rules.

8. Comfortable Walking Shoes

Cruise ships are enormous, and you'll probably walk more than you expect.

Add shore excursions, cobblestone streets, historic towns, and sightseeing tours, and comfortable shoes become essential.

Pack a good pair of walking shoes, casual sandals, and dressier shoes if you plan to enjoy elegant evenings onboard.

Travel Advisor Tip: Never bring brand-new walking shoes on a cruise without breaking them in first!

9. A Lightweight Jacket or Sweater

Even Caribbean cruises can get chilly in the evenings, especially on outdoor decks or inside air-conditioned restaurants and theaters.

A lightweight sweater or jacket takes up little space and can make a big difference.

For Alaska, Northern Europe, or cooler-weather itineraries, bring layers and appropriate waterproof outerwear.

10. A Waterproof Phone Pouch

Planning to visit the beach, take a boat excursion, or enjoy water activities?

A waterproof phone pouch can help protect your phone from splashes, sand, and unexpected rain.

It's also handy for keeping small essentials together during excursions.

Travel Advisor Tip: Test the pouch before your trip and don't assume it is safe for underwater use unless the manufacturer specifically rates it for that purpose.

11. A Lanyard or Small Crossbody Bag

Your cruise card may serve as your room key and onboard identification, and on some ships it is also used for purchases.

A lanyard, small crossbody bag, or compact wallet makes it easy to keep your essentials close.

Some newer ships use wearable technology or mobile apps instead, so check what your cruise line provides.

12. Packing Cubes

Want to unpack quickly and keep your cabin organized?

Packing cubes can be a game changer.

Separate casual clothing, swimwear, evening attire, and accessories into different cubes.

When you arrive, you can transfer them directly into drawers or shelves.

They're particularly helpful when sharing a cabin or traveling with children.

13. A Small Daypack for Shore Excursions

You'll want a lightweight bag for exploring ports.

A small backpack or crossbody bag is perfect for carrying sunscreen, a water bottle, sunglasses, identification, and other essentials.

Choose one that's comfortable, secure, and easy to carry while walking.

Travel Advisor Tip: Before leaving the ship, check which identification documents you need ashore and whether your destination has any restrictions on bringing food or other items off the ship.

14. Clothing for Theme Nights and Special Occasions

Cruise vacations offer plenty of opportunities to dress up and have fun!

Depending on your cruise line, you might encounter:

  • Formal or elegant evenings

  • White parties

  • Tropical or Caribbean-themed nights

  • Pirate nights on select family cruises

  • Specialty restaurant dress codes

Travel Advisor Tip: Check your cruise line's app or pre-cruise information for planned activities and dress guidelines. Not every cruise has the same theme nights.

15. The Cruise Line's Mobile App

This is one of the most useful cruise essentials, and it doesn't take up any suitcase space!

Before leaving home, download your cruise line's official app and create or verify your account.

Depending on the cruise line, the app may allow you to complete online check-in, access boarding information, make dining reservations, book excursions, review daily activities, and communicate onboard.

Travel Advisor Tip: Download the app before traveling and become familiar with it. Once onboard, follow your cruise line's instructions for connecting to the ship's Wi-Fi and using app features.

Bonus: What NOT to Pack for Your Cruise

Knowing what to leave at home is just as important as knowing what to bring.

Many cruise lines restrict or prohibit items such as:

  • Clothing irons and steamers

  • Candles and incense

  • Surge protectors and certain electrical adapters

  • Weapons and other dangerous items

  • Certain appliances and heating devices

  • Alcohol or beverages that exceed the cruise line's allowance

Policies vary by cruise line, ship, and itinerary. Always check the current prohibited-items list before departure.
